Meet Joint Commission and CMS mandates for OPPE/FPPE using OPAL

In 2007 The Joint Commission introduced new standards for Ongoing and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation. These requirements call for hospitals to evaluate all providers with privileges on six areas of competency: Medical/Clinical Knowledge, Patient Care, Interpersonal Skills and Communications, Practice Based Learning, Professionalism and Systems Based Practice. They further call for hospitals to place new providers, providers with new privileges and providers found to be deficient in an area where the peer review committee has agreed to continue privileges on a more Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE) program. Collecting and managing this information and the review process across a large base of providers has been a difficult and labor intensive effort for hospital staff as part of this review process.

OPAL makes this Process Simple and more Objective

OPAL is designed to aid in automatically gathering performance data on individual providers and comparing them to their peers by specialty using data that it pulls from MEDITECH and other Medisolv products. The Medical Staff Office and Peer Review Committee can use OPAL to compare providers by:

  • Patient outcomes data from Patient Safety and Quality measure performance for Patient Care.
  • CMS and Joint Commission Core Measure results for Practice Based Learning.
  • Utilization of resources for their Top 10 DRGs.
  • Volumes, looking at Top 10 DRGs and APR-DRGs
  • Standard length of stay
  • Readmission rates
  • Mortality vs. expected mortality
  • Case mix index
Other features that make OPAL stand out include:

  • Tools to develop your own manual data entry indicators to capture provider data for Clinical Knowledge, Interpersonal Skills or Professionalism.
  • Integration with Medisolv's ENCOR application to assign responsibility of Core Measure non-compliance issues to the admitting or discharging physician or the principal surgeon vs. assigning everything to the attending.
OPAL provides the tools needed to manage your OPPE/FPPE program as well:

  • Document reviews in provider specific files
  • Place Providers on FPPE and monitor them more frequently as needed
  • Upload scanned documents to support the review process
  • Identify upcoming reviews and providers who have no review scheduled
